This year Newsweek ran a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/6-stories-race-family-and-dystopian-world-high-school-writers-463178\" target=\"_blank\">big story<\/a> on the GWN program, featuring six selections from the anthology. And one was by my own mentee, Winkie Ma! I am beyond thrilled.<\/p>\n<p>Her piece came out of one of GWN\u2019s monthly genre workshops: Dystopian Flash Fiction. I had vaguely heard of flash fiction but had never met it, so to speak. I haven\u2019t written fiction since my 20s, so a fiction workshop is a challenge for me. Adding a 500-word limit and making the piece dystopian didn\u2019t make it easier. She produced a draft of a\u201cdark\u201d tale easily. Then, sitting in our customary writing haunt\u2014the caf\u00e9 in a Brooklyn Target\u2014we edited out every extraneous word.
